After hours of compiling and testing :

ffmpeg with faac and amr_nb support.
transcoding and streaming h263video or mpeg4 video with AAC
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* can play with QTPlayer on windows
* only video on realplayer symbian OS (player complains about sound is
not readable)

transcoding and streaming h263video or mpeg4 video with AMR narrow
band
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
* can play with QTPlayer on windows with horrible sound
* can play on Realplayer symbian OS but sound is unaudible (like volume =
0) (player doesn't complain about sound)

Note that AMR is transcodable only with these settings : samplerate=8000
, channels=1 . So you can turn into trouble for transcoding some sound
format with 2 channels (eg wma2 ). And this makes impossible to have good
sound using amr.

Any suggests are welcome !

I didn't try to play the streamed mp4+aac (rtsp) with real player or helix player on my PC, so i'll try this to know if it's a format/hinting issue.

Isn't Realplayer based on the Helix DNA Client (described in the link you gave)? If that is true, then only amr-wb/samr will be supported over rtsp according to their description. AAC+ would be supported via HTTP streaming, though. Can VLC encode AAC+?

Helix player can be recompiled with mpeg4 support (i'm not able at this time to do this). I'm sure it can be streamed (as it works fine with QTPlayer etc.), but it seems that Realplayer/Helix DNA Client for mobile is just not able to play it, which sucks :(

if i have time, i will recompile vlc with samr support. but it will not be until next week.

Btw: did you try to set up vlc to stream mp4+aac over http instead of rtsp? Wondering if this would work with the mobile...

that sounds interesting... is it possible to stream mp4+aac over http with vlc? can you relay this stream via dss and access it through an sdp file?
I would be very glad to hear if you succeed in this :)

Otherwise my guess is trying to recompile vlc with amr-wb (a.k.a. samr) enabled, but I'm not sure if vlc can stream it... Maybe this would be the better solution because of the overhead of http.

Plz keep us posted,
I fall upon a description of the realplayer for mobile phones, and it seems that AAC audio cannot be streamed via rtsp with mpeg4 video. AAC audio can be streamed in http.

Hi,

I tried that about half a year ago with the same setup (vlc+dss+sdp), and I was also facing the same problem with the sound.
What device do you have? I have a Nokia 6630. The strange thing about it was, that it played mp4/aac content locally without problems -- but when I tried to stream the same mp4/aac content then there was no sound. Maybe it is a problem with the device not supporting aac streamed over rtsp..?
Because that did not work, I tried to stream with amr/samr audio instead of aac, but it failed because vlc does not officially support amr. Well, you need to compile ffmpeg with amr enabled and then recompile vlc with the amr-enabled ffmpeg. That allowed me to play amr files locally with vlc, but streaming amr was not supported at this time...

If you get it work somehow, either with aac or amr/samr, please let me know!
@VLC team: is it by now possible to stream amr/samr with a self-compiled ffmpeg lib? Did anyone succeed with that?

Cheers,
I'm trying to stream contents transcoding or not to mobile phones.
At the moment, i'm using VLC + DSS , but i cannot get the sound working on
my mobile phone.
The file plays fine when accessed directly through the url
rtsp://my.server.com:554/myfile.mp4 , but if i want to stream it with vlc +
DSS the mobile phone player (realplayer) doesn't load the sound. Accessing
the stream with QTplayer on my PC (windows) works fine.
Any idea about that ?
Someone got streaming for mobile phone (3GP) working ?
The goal would be to have vlc transcode a live stream and feed the DSS
server with a .sdp file.

thanks
