thx to the team, a specially to Matt,
You are right about the cvlc command, it was mentioned in the manual ... Anyway I ll test it tomorrow.
regarding my goal, I think it will better to explain before my architecture:
My server is (cluster) is an isolated little room so I am a little bit convinced that I ll not be able to connect directly my device (like webcam, camera or something else ...) to it.
That's why I was asking if there is a way to use the server in a kind of situation like I am using my cam here with my laptop ,connected to the server (in the same network) and doing the streaming but controlling it by using putty to emulate the server terminal ... Weird and complicated isn't it? If not, I ll have to connected my devices to the server ... but how?
I another hand, I am unable to stream ogg and flv file ... should I have to converts the file format into mpeg or something else ?
I attached my architecture ... Take a loot at it plz (it is just for the test but I have to reorganize everything after 'cos I ll use IPcop to secure the LAN)
thx again ...
Best regards ...

On Wed, Dec 16, 2009 at 7:47 PM, matt <matt@vitalit.co.uk> wrote:

Johnny,
No worries we all have to start somewhere ;-)

1)
a) If your vlc is recent then you should also have the cvlc command - this runs without any gui components.
b) Alternatively you can specify the interface with "vlc --intf dummy" or "vlc -I dummy".

2)
I'm sorry but I don't quite understand what you need - perhaps if you told me the type of source (file/stream/webcam/???) and destinations you need to support, and on which "boxname" you need to run each step on I could help more.

Hope this helps.

Very Best
Thank you very much ...
Actually it seems that it works: it can stream mp3, mpeg file but only if I execute the command line remotely via putty (that's weird !!!!). So I have two questions plz:
1- How can I deactivate the gui in the server (to help me to execute the command line locally)
2- My goal is not to stream from the server (Dell) but to do it via the server. e.g: to stream (in real time ) a conference ....
Sorry for these weird questions, I am new in this stuff.
Thanks in advance.
Best regards.
Hi,
This looks like one of two things :

1) Your ffmpeg is lacking in x264/aac support. This is common as
these parts are restricted due to licensing issues. Ubuntu
includes an option for you to install the "unstripped" ffmpeg -
how you achieve the same on other distro's I do not know.

2) Your vlc was not compiled with the proper ffmpeg / x264/aac
support. If this is the case you will need to download and
compile vlc manually.

Regards
Hi guys,
I think I get what's going on: the server (dell poweredge 2950
systems ) doesn't have a sound card ...
So what do I have to specify in the command line to do the
streaming anyway.
Best regards
