This is just a sidenote, and perhaps a good idea.

I saw once on freshmeat a project called "encoder script generator". It was
a nice little gui that you could use to make easy reusable wrapper scripts
for mencoder and ffmpeg and transcode (some of those, at least). Then I
thought that this --sout parameter to vlc is getting increasingly long, but
people don't want to run a transcoding streaming server on a gui machine, at
least they don't want to keep up the gui for the server while streaming, so
I got this idea:

What about compiling the wxwindows streaming wizard as a standalone app that
will generate a invokation script for a vlc streaming server. Or at least a
--sout parameter. This script/file could then be easily moved to another box
for actual (headless) invocation.

Just a little insane idea.
