- I've created patch against latest master of git repository
git://git.videolan.org/vlc.git. What do you mean it is not git tree?
- To my knowledge vlc.desktop.in is used as source for vlc.desktop. Am I wrong?

I haven't included nntp and gopher schemes in desktop file. Therefore
I don't understand why would "desktop" known that.

I've found that gnome-default-applications-properties (Gnome
application for setting couple of default applications) thinks that
application which can handle http is web browser. Because of that it
lists VLC in list of available web browsers which could confuse user.

You are right. Now desktop doesn't automatically know that VLC can
handle streams from HTTP and FTP. These can be added be added if
aforementioned Gnome "problem" is ok.
