I suggest at least increasing the default buffer size from 65536 to (e.g.) 100000.  The problem is with video streams that have ridiculously large 'key frames'.  H.264 streams should be encoded so that large 'key frames' are broken up into 'slices' - with each slice being able to be sent (and received) as a separate NAL unit.  But unfortunately, receivers like VLC have no control over the many brain-damaged servers out there that send huge 'key frames' :-)

Adding an option to set the buffer size sounds fine.  But it's probably a good idea to increase the default size as well.
