Sorry, it's my fault. I've built VLC with libmad installed via MacPorts and haven't noticed that original tarball lacks of .pc file.<br>
<br>
MacPorts, Ubuntu and Debian packages, FreeBSD port and maybe some more distributives provides mad.pc with libmad.<br>
<br>
MacPorts: <a href="https://trac.macports.org/browser/trunk/dports/audio/libmad/files/mad.pc.in" target="_blank">https://trac.macports.org/<u></u>browser/trunk/dports/audio/<u></u>libmad/files/mad.pc.in</a><br>
Debian: <a href="http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/amd64/libmad0-dev/filelist" target="_blank">http://packages.debian.org/<u></u>wheezy/amd64/libmad0-dev/<u></u>filelist</a><br>
Ubuntu: <a href="http://packages.ubuntu.com/raring/amd64/libmad0-dev/filelist" target="_blank">http://packages.ubuntu.com/<u></u>raring/amd64/libmad0-dev/<u></u>filelist</a><br>
FreeBSD: <a href="http://svnweb.freebsd.org/ports/head/audio/libmad/files/" target="_blank">http://svnweb.freebsd.org/<u></u>ports/head/audio/libmad/files/</a><br>
<br></div>
My point is adding mad.pc to contrib/src/mad as separate patch (or reworked this) would fix <a href="http://configure.ac" target="_blank">configure.ac</a> <<a href="http://configure.ac" target="_blank">http://configure.ac</a>> to build VLC with system-wide installed libmad.<br>

</blockquote>
<br>
What if someone compiled and built their own libmad from the upstream tarball (i.e. didn't have the distribution-customized version with the .pc)?<br>
<br>
