vlc no go on Compaq ARMADA laptop

Any thoughts why I get these errors trying to use vlc?

I get no sound or video, dvd winds up, errors occur, it winds down, with 
no visual indication that it was going to play.
Problem always occurs, not intermittent.

I have rw access to /dev/hdb, and /dev/dvd is a symbolic link to it.
Using vlc-0.2.90-1 libdvdcss0-0.0.3-1 on PIII redhat 7.1 plus current 
updates kernel 2.4.9-6
dmesg shows "hdb: COMPAQ DVD-ROM DRD-U424, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive"
This hardware worked with oms using the same dvd, but I'm interested in 
the features of vlc :-) .
