5.1-sound with 2ch soundcard

I have a PowerBook G4 and a Sony Receiver with a DD & DTS decoder. I want to watch a DivX-movie with AC-3 5.1 or a DVD with DD or DTS and use my reciever to decode the 5.1-sound. The receiver has optical input and I have just bought a Sony PCLK-U5, witch I connect to the USB-port and on the other end there's an optical output. It works great with 2ch sound, but how do I get it to work with 5.1?

VLC mixes down 5.1 to 2ch, doesn’t it, or where is the limitation?
- PCLK-U5 optical output? (doesn't this hardware support 5.1? I thought it just transported the digital signal)
- The sound-card? (I thought I was bypassing it with the PCLK-U5 optical output, don’t I?)
- The operating system? (mac os x should support it, shouldn’t it?)
- VLC?

Does anyone know if there’s a way to make it work?
