browser-based VLC myself.

There is a mozilla plugin version of vlc. It works for x11 and windows. It 

is shiped with debian, and there are binary packages for other linux distros 

as well. Other X11 users and windows users will have to compile the plugin

for them selfs ( configure with --enable-mozilla)
