I've done some research, the last part of what you're entering in the 8080 is a port identification. Do you have a firewall that might be blocking the port. If you've got a broadband router or similar device it might have an internal firewall blocking the 8080 port. Another thing that might be being blocked is the UPnP, Universal Plug and Play, Audio Visual standard. Can you check that any networking devices don't have a active block on the port or anything called UPnP. You might have to check the hardware manufacturer as to how to check.

Also, you might have to install software to allow UPnP streaming or change a settings. I'm not sure what either Debian or my distro's defaults are though regarding UPnP Audio Visual.

Yes. It is on my internal network. I have ssh'ed from one box to the other
in both directions with success. You would not be able to ping it because it
is not a public IP!

Thanks for taking the trouble. But I thought that I was entering the IP of
the place I wanted to stream _from_. Is that the problem?

I have pinged the target from another box on the network. I can't at the
moment ping from the one with the error message, because it is my husband's
computer and he is currently using it!
