Thanks, this helps. There are a few things you could check so the
problem can be diagnosed.( I scattered them in between the error message)

Network is up here. UDP packets come in on the specified port.

Looks like the network link got disconnected temporarily. Did you check
at this point if you could still ping the server machine?

Here things start going wrong of course the buffer got with recv() is in
an undetermined state.

There is a known bug in gpe-vlc-0.5.3 (vlc-0.5.3) which make vlc crash
when the function recv() fails (returns -1). In vlc-0.6.2 this is fixed,
packages are being built and tested this week. I hope to release
vlc-0.6.2 for ipaq this weekend.
Are you going to upgrade to familiar 0.7.1? Or should I also create a
familiar v0.6 ipaq package?
I'd like to know how many vlc users on iPaq still run familiar v0.6.
Please report.
