Well, this  seems to be a  bug in the  VLC. Could you please  launch VLC
with the -vvv option and send us the log ?

Moreover, if you are using the alsa  sound module, could you try the OSS
compatibility  layer  (you  can  set  that  in  the  audio  tab  of  the
preferences).
