You are right - VLC will do what you want.

Try these steps (I am explaining how to use the GUI. You can get the same
results
using command line options).

Start VLC on the Win2K server and click on 'File' -> 'Open Disc'. Click on
the 'DVD' radio button (the one without 'menus support') and check the
'Stream
Output' box. Click on 'Settings' next to the check box and click on 'UDP'
and
enter the IP address of your laptop. Click OK.

On the laptop, start VLC and click on 'File' -> 'Network Stream'. Type in
the IP address of the desktop in the 'Open target' box (after udp://).

You should be able to view the DVD on your laptop.
