When you say "VLS-0.5.3 video input" do you mean don't use the CVS version, or to use the Video for Linux input? If so,
am I understanding properly that this will require more cpu power, because it is not using the hardware encoding of the
pvr250 card? (I had been using a lower-end spare machine for testing because I had the hardware encoding.)

The  VLS-CVS  pvr  input  still   has  some  problems.  Either  use  the
VLS-0.5.3  video   input,  or   VLC  stream   output  (you'll   have  to
compile   a  VLC   yourself),   please  see   in   the  VideoLAN   howto
(http://www.videolan.org/doc), in the acquisition card section.
