HTTP works but as u mention its not THAT suited/good for the job
RTSP/RTP(UDP) works very well with vlc, I use it my self to serve mpeg2
streams.
There is one more or less serious bug in the vlc implementation atm though,
when a client quits the stream unexpected like if he just closes program or
computer, vlc will continue to send data to his pc, so it's a sort of DOS
attack.
We hope this will be fixed soon, if vlc had an RTCP implementation this
wouldn't be an issue.
