We was trying many tests with VLC in this plataforms:

Server:
1) Intel 32bits PIV 3.2GHz HT 1GB RAM + Windows XP + VLC 0.8.2
2) Intel 32bits PIV 3.2GHz HT 1GB RAM + Debian Linux kernel 2.6.11 + VLC
0.8.2
3) PowerMac G5 64bits 2.7GHz 1.5GB RAM + Mac OS X 10 "Tiger" + Quicktime
Broadcaster

Clients:
1) Intel 32bits PIV 2.8GHz 1GB RAM + WindowsXP + VLC 0.8.2
2) Intel 32bits PIV 2.8GHz 1GB RAM + Debian Linux kernel 2.6.11 + VLC 0.8.2

streaming parameters:
- video: 720x480, 768kbps, 30fps
- audio: 44100kHz, stereo, 128kbps

* First problem: VLC for Mac OS can't make real time streaming because
don't have the option to capture from a DV camera by firewire port...
only relay other streaming, streaming a saved file or DVD ...
The streaming delay using Server 1) or 2) is 1.5 seconds, and using
server 3) is 0.5 seconds!! (we need half second delay because its for a
interactive transmissions). Our preference its to use VLC, but to use
the MacG5 in real time streaming we need to use Quicktime Broadcaster.

* Second problem: ok, using server 3), in our LAN, multicast protocol is
the better option and everything is ok, VLC can decode the MPEG-4 video
streaming perfectly ... but when I try to make a unicast streaming, over
http or udp, VLC can't play nothing ... the error messagens are "garbage
at input", "nothing to play", etc. And this is for one client only ...
but I need to make unicast to many points, in other states, conected in
a WLAN by a dedicated link with 1Mbps (MPLS).
So, I install the Darwin Streaming Server in MacG5 to act as a unicast
live streaming server ...
VLC can conect to Darwin over rtsp, but the delay is 12 seconds!

I read much in VLC forum, Darwin forum, Google ...... but its not usual
people with a 1Mbps dedicated link to make streaming ... the usual its
make streaming over the internet, when buffers delays are required and
12s its acceptable.

Any idea ?? Someone can help-me?
