That's why I think that DxVA-enabled video decoders might
help. If I can offload some of the MPEG decoding tasks to 
the video card, the CPU will be less stressed and it may 
be able to do the job.

This is a good idea but unfortunately, transcoding is not 
an option. I am demonstrating a wireless network and the 
idea is to show that it can easily handle a high-def 
stream. I know the network can handle the stream (since I
can dump the video and play it back and it doesn't seem to
be missing any frames) but the choppy playback doesn't
indicate this. 

Most of the vendors of HDTV tuner cards have DxVA enabled
players but the players can play only streams they receive
from the tuner card or local files and can't play network
streams.

I will continue to try to find some combination of 
streaming server, media player and MPEG decoder that works. 
In the meantime I will use vlc to show standard def video
streams.
