I am not sure I understand the actual problem.
Are you receiving the video stream over a network
interface? Then can't vlc play it directly? Why do
you need pipes?
I have used named pipes (on WinXP) to send a video
file to vlc but that was only because the video
was coming over a USB interface. If you are getting
the video over a network, I recommend that you use
that and avoid pipes.
I may be missing some basic problem with your setup
so please feel free to correct me.
