The default setting on most APs is to send multicast at a lower
data rate than unicast so that all the clients can receive it. If
you are using multicast over a WLAN you will see lower performance
than unicast.

See if your AP allows you to change the rates at which multicasts
are sent. Some do.

I don't know if there are any APs that you can buy today that 
have QoS support but there probably will be pretty soon. Anyway, 
you have highlighted one of the big problems with QoS - how to
get the apps to use it. The network guys expect the application
to indicate that it needs QoS but that is nearly impossible
because it would mean modifying vlc and all other a/v apps.
There is no clear answer right now but hopefully the vendors
will figure something out by the time the products are ready.
