[streaming] Buffer management in vlc for streamed sources

All,

is there any detailed information on how vlc internally manages
buffering for various sources such as files and DVB-S/T/C? My
understanding is there is isn't any at this stage and that streaming
process is dependent on the hardware (ie: hard drive) and OS performance.

The reason I ask the question is that I've noticed some interesting
behavior with "bursty" sources that can impact STB buffering and
decoding and/or networking equipment along the data path.

Any thoughts on this specific topic or ways to improve/solve the issue(s)?

Thomas
