Hi Viktor,
Just tested with WMV2 on an (unmodified) WMP9 WinXP machine - same
problem (video codec is detected correctly as 'Windows Media Video 8' ,
no indication that WMP finds anything wrong, but video rendered only as
a horizontal line).

I would think that installing 'non-standard' (ie non-MS-supplied) codecs
would make almost anything work, as long as it fits into the WMP-framework.

Nope, WMV2 does not work on WMP9 (see above).
Likewise, DIV3 (as the HOWTO suggests) works just as well on similarily
unmodified WMP10 installs. WMV2 works on these as well.
Could it be that my transcoder version(s) are mangling the stream
somehow, so that it no-longer is compatible with WMP9 (ie, that the
codecs are supported and work, but the stream itself is broken against
WMP9 clients?
Viktor, if you have this running - could you make a stream available
that I can connect to with a WMP9 client? Please mail-me off list if you
can/want to help so we can agree on a time/date for the test.

I of course am not (I have no idea which codecs are bundled with a
typical WMP install), but so far, MP3 audio has worked without problems
on all unmodified WMP9 and -10 installs, so I'm assuming that WMP9 and
-10 come with MP3 codec support compiled (or at least bundled) in.
So - my question remains - is there a VLC configuration that is able to
transcode and stream to 'any' WMP9 and -10 (preferably others as well)
install?
'Any', in this case meaning that only the codecs bundled with it, or
available on Microsofts automatic download-service are used.
