Then you just want to test the quality of the encoder and decoder.
I suggest that you look at another open source project, mpeg2dec,
http://libmpeg2.sf.net, which has an option to save raw YUV frames.

VLC's decoder isn't quite the same as libmpeg2, but all calculations
have been borrowed from libmpeg2, so I expect the quality to be
exactly the same.
