Could you try a few things (with the directx plugin) ?

1 - Try to run vlc without audio (vlc --noaudio yourvideofile)
2 - Try to run vlc without video (vlc --novideo yourvideofile)
2 - Try to run vlc with video overlay disabled (vlc --nooverlay yourvideofile)
3 - Try to run vlc with overlay and some accelerations disabled (vlc --nooverlay --directx-use-sysmem --no-directx-hw-yuv yourvidefile)

It should help track the problem.

I would also strongly advise you to reinstall the latest drivers for your graphics card and directx as well.
