Thanks a million - it helped and it all works again.

I had a quite a few versions of the rouge module. I just deleted the whole
of /usr/local/lib/vlc directory and executed the "make install" command
again.

This is usually a problem with having several versions of plugins installed,
or old plugins lying around.

Try to see which plugin makes VLC segfault with the following command:
strace -fFeopen vlc
