I've had  the same kind  of issues  with a brand  new dvd drive  with no
region set. Libdvdcss was unable to decrypt the dvd. The only solution I
found was to  use a "commercial" dvd  player software in order  to set a
region on the  drive (even if this  region is different from  the one of
the dvd you want to read...)

Alternatively you could flash your drive with a RPC1 patched firmware...
