Your contribution is most welcome. VLC Media Player uses the gettext 
internationalization library for translation.

You can find the translation table here:

It is quite long.
http://developers.videolan.org/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/trunk/po/pt_BR.po may 
be a good start in the case of Portuguese

It is best to use Subversion, as explained at:
http://developers.videolan.org/svn.html
so you can keep your translation in sync with the main trunk. Otherwise, 
updating might be fairly inconvenient for you.
