All 0.8.x versions of VLC use more memory then the previous ones. Since 
0.8.2 (If I remember correctly) VLC can be compiled to use less memory. 
This should ease your problem, but you will need to recompile VLC by 
hand (but make sure to do the external libraries first). Goto 
developers.videolan.org/doc for information on doing (cross-)compiles 
for VLC.
