Unless someone writes a sip plugin for the vlc, vlc won't be usable as
sip client. It can already read rtp streams, but it has no ability to
open a sip session. I don't think anyone plans to write a sip plugin.

I use mainly linphone and kphone as sip clients with SER, do you use
other sip softphones ? or videophones ?
