[vlc-devel] playing from a file, which is 0 bytes in size

what is the proper avenue I should follow to add an option to allow 
playing a file which the OS reports as size 0?

case in point if I:

  dd if=//testserver8/video/realtime.mpg of=test.mpg
  vlc test.mpg


everything is fine, but if I:
  vlc \\testserver8\video\realtime.mpg

there is no joy.
