I am currently trying to adapt a JVC GY-HD100E camcorder to HiDef 720p microscopy. Proprietary software has so far been a lot of pain. By chance I came to realize that VLC could access this really nice camera via firewire, et voila ...
it even streams HD microscopic content over the institutional Gigabit network. 
Apparently you have created a very useful open source tool for HD-telepathology
