Indeed, I've been wondering why this hasn't been on our trac yet. (and
been planning to add it there). I think we should take this as an
opportunity to clean up things here and there.

Currently we have some v4l2 code in the pvr module and some in the dvb
module, and we have v4l code in the v4l module and the satelie module
(which have been removed I think).

On the other side of the sysctls, linux-dvb and v4l2 have allready been
merged in order to handle the new load of hybrid devices on the market,
and the ivtv people are working to merge ivtv into v4l2. This last part
includes (as I understand it) defining a new v4l2-mpeg api to unify
various mpeg encoder cards existing. Furthermore it seems newer tv-audio
drivers are implemented as alsa only, while the current v4l module is
thightly linked to OSS.

So a new v4l2 module should handle the following things:
 * Analog video capture in various formats (mpeg, mjpeg, raw etc)
 * analog part of hybrid devices (properly handle when digital part is
   in use)
 * Audio capture from oss or alsa (preferably modular so other things
could be used as well, jack?)

Thats my two norwegian øre on this
