[vlc-devel] Win32 shortcuts for setting Video, Audio and Interface preferences

Hello,

Windows users frequently ask for support on compatibility issues with
Video settings (blank screen, weird colored video, HW acceleration
problems, conflict with WMP11, Vista) or Audio settings (no working
SPDIF out). Switching from DirectX to OpenGL or Waveout is often an
acceptible workaround.

On a standard installation the approach would be about 10 steps: Start
VLC, Settings, Preferences, Video, expand the Video menu, Output
modules, Enable Advanced options (which is already confusing to find for
many users), select OpenGL, Save all, then VLC first needs to close and
restart again in order to use OpenGL.

Another often asked question is how to set Skins mode permanently. This
is also not available anymore as a shortcut option in 0.8.6-test2a.

I propose to have a specific Utilities subfolder in the Start menu from
which you can (re)set these key options through a one-click shortcut
which sets and saves these directly in the preferences file. Moving the
"Reset VLC defaults" option to an extra subfolder also prevents
accidental usage (there's no warning/confirmation when used).

Any objections to this approach?

Set Main Interface to wxWidgets (default)
-I wxwin --save-config vlc:quit
Set Video to DirectX (default)
--vout directx --save-config vlc:quit
etc.

Regards,

D
