I meant to say 'static libs' not 'shared libs'. Also, I believe you had a question about debugging the other day. If you use emacs 22, you can perform 'IDE like' debugging with the executable. Just open it up and type 'Alt-x gdba', and make sure that you configure with --enable-debug and --disable-optimizations.

VLC builds shared libs with the .la extension, not .a. I would recommend trying to compile directly with gcc rather than kdevelop. You should of course perform a ./configure 'whatever' followed by a make and a make install(as root). If you are using the subversion code, don't forget to run ./bootstrap before ./configure.
