This is a very good idea. Just a few remarks:

* For ASS/SSA subtitles, you could have a a look to libass.sf.net since the ASS subtitles specification is a bit more complex than MPL2 or MicroDVD, and all as already been implemented there. Another idea is to use the young asa library (http://asa.diac24.net).

* For many more classic subtitles, we 'just' need italic, bold, RGB color (we have only a few colors), underline and font changing (already possible, I think) to render 90% of the subtitles.
