The RTSP client protocol code that VLC uses (the "LIVE555 Streaming 
Media" libraries) fully supports seeking (and 'trick play' operations 
like fast forward and reverse play).  However, the VLC media player 
code apparently does not always use this functionality properly. 
(BTW, this is especially true when playing incoming MPEG 
Transport/RTP Streams; I'll be sending out more email about that 
within the next few days.)

In the meantime, it would be useful if you could send - to this 
mailing list - specific, detailed examples of what you feel does not 
work with VLC when playing from a DSS.  (For your initial testing, 
you should use the full, pre-built binary version of VLC - not a 
"reduced and recompiled" version of VLC that you have built yourself.
