How would this work under Linux?  The user may not have permission
to update the core files.

Also Linux distributions may choose to do their own updating (i'm
thinking of Ubuntu's package manager) so they may wish to disable
the update module when they build vlc.

This is similar to how Firefox behaves under Ubuntu... the update
option is greyed out.
