AFAICT, this waits 3 seconds, while the message says 30.

Second, I would expect the whole thing to suck pretty badly if the 
access_output needs to be stopped while it is sleeping.

Third, reconnecting every 3 seconds is antisocial. You need to use exponential 
backoff here.
