You need Xcode 2.4 or 2.5 on Mac OS X 10.4.9 or later. VLC's 0.8.6  
branch was never ported to 10.5 and will probably never will. That's  
why an enormous bunch of 3rd party libraries don't get compiled and  
packaging VLC.app will fail.

You probably want to wait about 2 weeks for VLC 0.9.0 to be released,  
which will compile nicely on all (even future) releases following 10.4.
