Evenif I think that's a good change, it seams that make check isn't
happy with NDEBUG in public headers ...

Looking for private defines in public headers...
../include/vlc_variables.h:#ifndef NDEBUG

Maybe we might change make check to accept NDEBUG as that' a known name.
