Dennis, Richard, anyone else with a v4l2 device (especially those with
MPEG compression capabilities),

Could you please provide the output from
./vlc -vvv --no-audio -I dummy --v4l2-audio-method 0 v4l2://
with your different devices? To see if any ... interesting controls
appear after this commit. If they do, you could also try -I qt and see
if the controls work ok in the Extended Panel's v4l2 tab.
