kde developers have encountered the same bug with their videodevice source 
code evolution : See http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=156028

Perhaps, you should avoiding to keep any form of retro-compatibility with 
0.9.0 as it is not worth the effort. When vlc 0.9.0 will be released, any 
majors distro will have recents kernels enough to handle these new features.
