We figured the problem Sigmund had was snd_pcm_status_get_delay()
returning 0 even if the state was SND_PCM_STATE_RUNNING .

Did you try the patch from
http://mailman.videolan.org/pipermail/vlc-devel/2008-January/038338.html ?

Are you able to try it with S/PDIF hardware ?
