That's just not true. ActiveX, pkg-config, version.c, installers, etc also
need to have the version number, sometime _not_ in the canonical "x.y.z"
format. They just substitute it from configure/config.status. There is
absolutely no reason why this would not work for anything else, except
binary-formatted files. And binary files are no go, because we cannot
impose dedicated file editors on other developers.

There is no reason why OSX would set a precedent here (and I'll continue to
ignore it as far as I am concerned).
