No, you still can, here is what you gotta do:

Hang around on IRC : irc://irc.freenode.net/videolan and start digging
the VLC source code.

We want to see a small patch to prove you can build VLC (at least
natively for now). There is some patch ideas on this mailing list (look
for "Ideas" in the archive of this month), but you are free to fix any
bug :)

Also do you have previous experience with embedded devices, GUIs,
etc .. In the fields required for porting VLC to openmoko that is.
