http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc234805.aspx gives an example 
of a path.

Why do you ask anyway? I captured packets sent and received from the 
server by vlc and wmp. The only difference that mattered was how they 
sent the file path. And in case of vlc, server returned error code "You 
do not have access to the location or file" (0x80070005). I think it 
explains everything.

I'm not sure I understand what you mean. Are there any difficulties with 
applying this patch? I made it against vlc source in git tree. Before I 
posted to this mailing list, I tried to apply the patch and I didn't 
have any problems.
