Sorry, me again - there's this note in my distro's config file for speex: # pulseaudio 0.9.11 requires speex >= 1.2beta3 # vlc 0.7.2 wants speex 1.1 libraries. so this means that VLC at one point already tracked the 1.1 series (whether or not consciously).
