I think that the http server can handle a few requests once in a while.
If we assume, based on download statistics on the website, that we have
50,000,000 windows and mac users that leave the auto update feature on
and keep the default 'check once every week' setting, that means we get
about 7,000,000 requests per day.
In the previous 5 hours ganesh has already handled 500,000 requests on
apache2 and 700,000 requests on lighttpd. Considering that the last 5
hours are the ones where we have less trafic, we can extrapolate to
let's say 10,000,000 requests a day being served currently. So yes,
7,000,000 is quite a lot to add, but these will only be 2 small files.
We even have the option to move the update.videolan.org hosting to
skanda which could easily handle that load.

Of course we never know what can go wrong but I'd say that we should be
ok.
