I removed WLAN now (it was unsatisfactory anyway).

As Derk-Jan Hartman pointed out in http://mailman.videolan.org/pipermail/vlc-devel/2008-September/050265.html 
  disabling mmap results in the old behaviour from 0.8.6, that is the  
Caching Value is respected again.
