If that can help, please find three independent sets of patches for this
purpose. They can be applied all or part of them, or just ignored if
other plans are underway. They have been tested on Debian and WinNT.

Set1:
- patch1: the xdg file providing helper functions (taken from their web
site)
- patch2 : implements VLC_PICTURES/MUSIC/VIDEOS_DIR in src/config/dirs.c
for Win32 and Linux. Apple may need some more work.

Set2:
- patch3 : create "snapshot-file" and "record-file" for signaling new
materials
- patch4 : enable snapshot (with snapfile-file)
- patch5 : enable record (with record-file)

Set3:
- patch6 : a service discovery to import PICTURES/MUSIC/VIDEOS
directories in GUI  (first draft, works fine but need to be improved ..)
