ehm, this isn't about using Terminal or not, but about whether you're  
using a C-Shell (tcsh, csh, ...) or a Bourne-Shell (bash, ...). I'll  
add a note on this and put the focus on bash as Pierre suggested, as  
it is the default shell on OS X since the 10.2 release.

I'll see how to change the write protection of this page.
